I love social media! Seriously, the thought of being "connected" to a person I've never met, known, or even seen in person is AMAZING!!!
You need something, it's only a download away, and there's pretty much an app for anything now-a-days.
Being a woman who has witnessed and partook in bell-bottoms (for the second time in the 90s/2000s), Y2K, and literally the dawn of Facebook, I can tell you, I've SEEN some things in the past 20 years or so.
My kids will never know the struggle of dial up internet, never know what it's like to not to be able to text or use a computer, or even know what it's like to have to use physical money to shop for everything (they of course can use Apple pay or have me send food via Uber Eats). This generation has got the convenience part of life on lock.
Do I miss writing letters and talking on a corded phone for hours, of course I do! But I too, understand, that times have to change.
I teach my girls how to send thank you cards for gifts received and how to call to check up on grandparents and loved ones. We can't lose track of the old in attempt to live in the new. Yes, I text, and yes, I use delivery services for food & wine & groceries, but hey, why not? It's these little conveniences that make life easier. But I also know the importance of receiving a 'thinking of you', 'get well soon', & 'thank you' card at the right moment in anyone's life. I know an email or phone call can change your day for the better. I know that checking on someone makes them feel loved and wanted. These are simple ideals taught to me by my grandmother, that I hope to pass down to my children and the generations to come.
I can not express how much this year has meant to me. YES, there was a TON of BAD to happen. YES, we're recovering from some heavy duty, deep rooted, painful and social atrocities. YES, we have lost loved ones, so, so many loved ones. But I do think, as a people, we've also gained the ability to love more, to understand more, to empathize more. I've never felt as close to my family and friends as I have since the beginning of this pandemic. Even those family members and friends who are miles and miles away, I feel them in my heart everyday. I send out good vibes and daily prayers for them all.
So yeah I've lived through five decades: the 80's birthed me, the 90's raised me, the 2000's opened my eyes, and 2010's changed me, and in 2020 I'm still learning, evolving, and becoming. I don't know what will happening in the next 20, 30, or even 40 years. I can only HOPE. I'm gonna always party like it's 1999 and Live the best life I can!
