So.. I finally got tired of NOT reading (no one should EVER be that BUSY)... I mean it's one of my favorite things to do! My first real job was at a library for Pete's sake! I loved working there! But what made me really fall in love with books is my personal library as a kid. It consisted of 2 bookshelves, which to a 4 year old, seemed like two mountains. My grandmother filled those shelves with all types of books! I had a ball reading everyday. Of course I had my favorites, but nothing was better than sitting on my floor with a book! When I got old enough, about 6 or 7, we would walk to the library every Saturday morning in the spring & summer. I started with books that came with those little cassette tapes (yes, I said tapes!!!). I would read everyday. It was my way of escaping the melodramas of my childhood, my pre-teen, & even, my teen-aged years.
Luckily for me, Chicago has a REALLY great library system. Having worked at Harold Washington Library Center for 2 years during high school, I really got the chance to learn about the system. I'm usually very busy Monday through Sunday, sometimes so much I don't have time to really look around the library. What makes this system so great is the fact I can browse the library on-line and select the books I want to read. I can then either pick them up from the listed library or place them on-hold and have them shipped (FREE of Charge) to my neighborhood library!!!! So not only do I get to rent the books free, the city has a service that ships the books to where I can pick them up free, too! It's definitely a win-win situation for the patron.
I've been really doing a lot of reading lately, really channeling those feelings of utopia from my childhood. Instead of having a glass of milk and a cookie, I've been curling up with some coffee (decaf if it's late) and really locking myself in. Last night after I got the girls off to bed, I had a lot of housework to do, So I set my timer on my phone to buzz me after 1 hour... when my buzzer rang loud and clear, I was NOT ready to stop. It's like that with a good book!
